Grants and other funding programs are available from federal, state and territory governments and in some cases the local councils. In general there are no grants available for starting a business. However, there are grants and other assistance available for business activities, such as expanding your business, research and development, innovation and exports.

Small business grants are closer than you think. In fact, the small business grants to start or expand your business may be available in your country of origin.

Although there are no direct subsidies available to small businesses by the federal government, many state development agencies offer direct small business grants and other forms of financial assistance to encourage and help entrepreneurs start or expand a small business.

State Small Business Grants and Funding Hot Prospects

Financing of small businesses incentives are an important part of the economic growth plan of any state in the nation. Some states even offer small business grants. Other small businesses incentives may be subsidized rates on SBA loans, tax benefits and participation in business “incubator” programs.

We have all seen them, late night infomercials, websites, and reference guides, advertising “millions in free money” Do not Believe The Hype! While many subsidies on Grants.gov, some of them are available for individuals and none of them are available for personal financial assistance. If you are an alphabetical listing of federal personal assistance, you can visit USA.gov website Benefits, Grants, and Financial Aid page. Find out if you qualify to apply for grants to Grants.gov, check this helpful animated tutorial account.

There are many groups of organizations eligible to apply for government business grants. Typically most grantee organizations fall into the categories below.

Government Organizations

* Federated
* Local Governments
* City or Township Governments
* Special District Governments
* Native American Tribal Governments (federally recognized)
* Native American Tribal Governments (other than the federal government approved)

Education Organizations

* Independent School District
* Public and state controlled institutions of higher education
* Private institutions of higher education

Housing Organizations

* Public Housing Authorities
* Indian Housing Authorities

Non-Profit Organizations

* Non-profit, with a 501 status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
* Non-profit is not a 501 status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education

For-profit organizations (other than small businesses)

Small Businesses

Small business loans and small business grants are awarded to companies that meet the size standards that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has established for most sectors in the economy. The most common size standards are as follows:

* 500 employees for most industrial and mining
* 100 employees for all wholesale sectors
* 6 million U.S. dollars for most retail and service companies
* 28.5 million U.S. dollars for the most general and heavy construction industries
* $ 12 million for all special trade contractors
* 0.75 million U.S. dollars for most livestock industry

Note that about one quarter of the industry have a standard size that is different from these levels. They range from 0.75 million U.S. dollars to 28.5 million U.S. dollars for size standards based on the average annual income and 100 to 1500 employees for size standards based on the number of employees.

With few exceptions, all federal agencies, and many state and local governments, using the SBA size standards. You can find more information and for loan opportunities on the website of the Small Business Administration programs.

Individuals

A person shall account for a grant, and not on behalf of a company, organization, institution or government. Individuals sign the grant application and the associated certifications and assurances necessary for the requirements of the application process to fulfill. So, if you register as an individual, you will only be able to apply the opportunities open for individuals to know. An individual can not submit a grant application for a grant opportunity that is accessible only to organizations.
